We seem to have a need to carry several keys on our key ring…for the house, work, parents’ homes, or other cars. With all those keys hooked together, it can be heavy and bulky.
Weight matters.
Although more and more, cars have push-to-start and no key is inserted into the starter. But if you own a key-to-start vehicle, you want to take care and not have a heavy key chain. The weight of your keys can affect your starter.
One or two keys.
The weight of the key chain can wear out parts of the ignition called tumblers. A worn tumbler will no longer be able to engage and turn the ignition lock. The recommendation is to have 1-2 keys including your key-fob. If you need to have more than the recommended keys then put the additional keys on another key ring to keep in your car for easy access.
